Power supply design has always been key to the overall performance of audio products and with the 40 PSU, we have delivered not only a product packaged within the sleek design of the 40 series aluminium chassis, but a new approach to providing clean and stable power for your compatible 40 series host product. Incorporating its own on-board micro-processor, the 40 PSU communicates directly with the host product to consistently provide the best configuration of virtually noise-free power from a full range of digitally controlled voltage output levels.

When connected to the 40 AMP amplifier, the 40 PSU provides the power amplifier section with a serious injection of pure power, further amplifying the main amplifier supply voltages, and this means that the input signal can be amplified even more precisely and reproduced more accurately by our speaker system. During listening, we will appreciate greater precision, detail, spatiality or micro and macro dynamics. The preamplifier section is completely driven by the 40 PSU, which again means a more stable power supply directly leading to greater accuracy.

This leaves the internal power supply to handle the DAC section, and because it now does less work, the power it can deliver to the DAC is more stable and more efficient. In our listening tests we saw a huge improvement over the 40 AMP. We got more low-frequency boost, a larger soundstage, better detail, faster attack and overall better control of the rise and fall of sounds and more accurate timing.

When connected to the 40 CD, the 40 power supply feeds the master clock, which helps to improve jitter. The power supply also feeds the CD motors, which from an electrical point of view generate a lot of noise because the motors are constantly changing speed. Removing this part of the power supply outside the chassis reduces the overall noise and interference in the unit, helping the player to perform even more accurately.

The 40 PSU also takes over the power supply for the analogue side of the DAC, while an internal power supply powers the digital side of the DAC. Again, the separation of the power supplies helps to reduce noise and interference transfer. Sonically, we get better timing, better control of fundamental sounds, more accurate and precise timbre rendering and control of low frequencies, and improved stage imaging.

When connected to the 40 ST, the 40 PSU takes over powering the analogue side of the DAC and the BluOS network module. This provides those sections of the circuit with a cleaner more stable supply of power improving the audio performance of the streamer, bringing out new levels of detail in the music as well as offering greater control.

You will also find that it creates more space round the instruments and vocals providing greater depth and a holographic soundstage.
